Ann Beusch Distinguished Service Award

Dante M. de Tablan serves as vice-president for Neighbors United and Community Schools with the United Way of Central Maryland. In his work as a community school coordinator at Benjamin Franklin High School in Baltimore City, Dante visited homes in Brooklyn and Curtis Bay and learned how families live. He asked Latinx, Hispanic, Asians and Pacific Islander students, parents, and teachers in South Baltimore what would it take for their children to succeed. Together with colleagues and partners they developed wraparound programs for the students that include trauma-informed mental health, eviction prevention, adult literacy, emergency food, workforce development, mentoring, and a Family Center helping pregnant and parenting ESOL teens to graduate at a rate nearly twice the national average. This proof of concept of a community school transformed Benjamin Franklin High School into a national model recognized by the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington, D.C., State Superintendent Karen Salmon, University of Maryland Chancellor Jay Perman, and the United Way of Central Maryland. United Way then expanded the model into Neighborhood Zones, putting parents, neighbors, and working people at the table creating programs and services to ensure their families’ and their children’s success.
